Amazon is reportedly preparing to launch a full-colour e-reader using the e-ink technology that made its devices so popular.

The new addition to the Kindle range of devices is said to be readying for release later this year, with Chinese language newspaper Economic Daily News claiming orders have already been placed for the display modules.

E Ink Holdings has reportedly received orders for 6-inch colour e-reader modules from Amazon. Shipments are expected to begin in March, DigiTimes reported.

Accompanying figures suggested that shipments of touch-enabled e-reader modules are set to reach three million units a month.

Kyobo launched the first e-reader based on Mirasol colour display technology last year, as issues with cost compared to monochrome displays and clarity compared with LCD were overcome.

Much like e-ink technology, the screen can be read in direct sunlight and has a long battery life, which Kyobo claims can last for weeks with the Wi-Fi turned off, as no power is needed to maintain the display.
