Older style phones with monographic LCD screens generally cope better in cold conditions than their newer counterparts, new research shows.

Finnish magazine MikroPC tested 15 of the most popular handsets available in the country in a specially-designed weather room, starting the temperature at 0 degrees C and moving it down in 5 degree increments until the phones stopped working.

Samsung phones were found to be best able to cope with extreme cold, with all five continuing to function below -20 degrees C.

The most weather resilient smartphone was found to be the Samsung Galaxy S II, which functioned until -35 degrees C, although generally newer models featuring LCD screens fared worse than older phones.

The iPhone ceased to work before the temperature reached -10 degrees C, although an older Nokia phone lasted until almost -40.

Battery proved to be the key feature that allowed phones to withstand the cold longer. If very cold, phones will register the battery as empty, even when it is fully charged.
