A McDonald's branch in Texas has become the first to offer an interactive kiosk experience for customers with the installation of a new nutritional information display.

Located in the lobby of the restaurant is a 42-inch touch screen, offering the full menu and nutritional information.

A Build Your Meal feature allows customers to put together a meal in four steps - entrée, snacks or sides, beverages, and dessert – and receive nutritional information on their combined selection.

At each stage, food can be customised to reduce the calories or salt content, for example by removing the sauce. Healthier meal suggestions are also offered for customers who are counting calories or want to reduce their fat intake.

Jonathan Chan, owner of the franchise in Richardson, Texas, said: "At first, I was concerned about a negative response from consumers; that the information may turn them away from ordering certain menu items.

"In fact, it’s been 100 per cent positive, and at times has served as an opportunity to start a conversation with our customers."

Restaurants are also using digital signage to improve their customer service, linking the kitchen with the waiting staff and allowing for immediate updating of menus.
